Get to Know Scott Hoch - Most golf fans are familiar with Defending Champion Scott Hoch's numerous successes on the golf course, including 11 PGA TOUR victories, three Champions Tour titles and All-America honors at Wake Forest University. Hoch was a model of consistency on the PGA TOUR, finishing in the top-40 on the PGA TOUR Money List from 1982 - 2002 (excluding 1992 due to injury).
However, he has faced plenty of adversity in more recent years which threatened his golf abilities. A nagging wrist injury challenged Hoch in the beginning of 2003 and he then went on to suffer a left wrist sprain during the 2004 PGA Championship after trying to break a fall. He eventually had to undergo left-hand surgery in 2005 where doctors removed pieces of bone and cartilage and repaired a torn tendon that had snapped in April 2005. Hoch’s hard work and persistence were admirable, as he retooled his golf game for the start of his Champions Tour career in late 2006. The efforts paid off with his first victory in four years at the 2007 FedEx Kinko’s Classic, and a resurgent 2008 campaign where he enjoyed two victories, two runner-up finishes and nine top-10s.
Not many golf enthusiasts know of Hoch’s unfailing generosity off the course to causes very close to his heart, which gives testimony to his unassuming personality. Hoch’s son Cameron successfully battled a rare bone infection in his right leg and the experience led Scott and his wife Sally to donate $100,000 to the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, FL. Hoch now has a floor named after him at the Arnold Palmer Hospital thanks to his family’s donations. He and his family have also made large donations to other hospitals and churches in their home state of Florida.
